Sekaiju Font Collection

A big upgrade to a short-lived font.

Once upon a time, Atlus USA toiled tirelessly to design a pair of bespoke fonts for a certain dungeon crawling game on the Nintendo DS. Those fonts were promptly thrown into the trash for the European release of that game and the two sequels that would follow, unceremoniously replaced with the DS's system fonts.

This font set comes from a better timeline where Atlus's US localization team instead made something acceptable enough to use in the Euro release of EO1, as well as EO2 and EO3. Note the careful choice of words here - "acceptable," not "worthy."

While this pair of fonts seeks to be a more readable reimagining of Etrian Odyssey's original font set, great pains were taken to preserve some of the soulful jank (what some might call deliberate design flaws) that many still find charming about it to this day. Astute observers will note the tilted bars on glyphs like "f" and "t," the more appropriately positioned tail on the lowercase "l", the chaotic "lean" of several characters with no clear preference for one direction or the next, tasteful serifs on "i" and "j"... And even the wide-stanced "M" that harkens to the ones seen in the Game Boy Advance Final Fantasy ports. 

Long story short: Sekaiju Alpha and Sekaiju Beta would have still raised eyebrows in the Atlus USA localization office - but not enough to see it sent to the bin.

Sekaiju Alpha is meant for use at 12px and multiples thereof.

Sekaiju Beta is meant for use at 8px and multiples thereof.
